Gustavain is extrapolating a little, but Phillip doesn't bother to point it out because he's probably right. They don't know for sure, not really, about any of those lives other than this one and Azem's, but... given the two data points they have, it's not unreasonable to assume that all versions of him have been like this. (Maybe a thought for that future he doesn't much want to think about, just looking for the biggest damn hero around once Gustavain's left this version of himself behind.)

"Do you want to sit and be sad about it for a while longer?" he asks, and he's teasing a little bit it is a genuine question, "Or would you prefer to be distracted?"
